To exfoliate or not to exfoliate?

How often do you read that you should be exfoliating as part of your skin care routine? No doubt plenty, but you won't hear it from us.

Your skin has to last you a life time, so we recommend to always treat your skin in a gentle and caring manner. Think of how gentle you caress a child's face.

There’s numerous exfoliants around; scrubs, granules, microbeads (also damaging to our environment), mechanised brushes, acids and so forth. Harsh interference with the top layer of your skin is likely to result in dryness, dehydration, irritation, redness and sensitivity.

The top layer of your skin, the epidermis, is thin. Any harsh exfoliants and/or scrubbing action is going to be damaging. Dead cells are there for a reason, protecting the younger cells coming through on a natural 28 day skin cell cycle. They’re also helping to keep moisture in so your skin doesn’t become dehydrated.

Cleansing Cream with it’s press and roll application technique (no scrubbing) in your morning skin care ritual will remove dead cells that are ready to slough off in a gentle manner, as will your weekly Clarifying Clay Mask.

Your skin will still feel incredibly soft, with these simple techniques, and without any harsh exfoliants.

1) Incorporate ‘Compress & Hydrate’ into your daily regime. This method softens the pores of your skin resulting in a much deeper cleanse, and you’ll achieve much soften skin. You will also use your cleansing products much more economically as well.

Organic Cotton Compress Pack with Bath Essence. The cotton compress is extra large to retain warmth.

2) The other simple technique is to always complete your cleanse with cold water splashes. This activates a minute muscle that sits alongside the hair follicle, causing it to contract which assists in removing any last remaining dirt, this also has a skin softening effect.

How to Compress & Hydrate

Fill a basin with warm water, and pour a little Dr. Hauschka Bath Essence under the tap while doing so.

  1. Fold the compress cloth in half and half again, both folds to be length wise, not square, and place in the water.

  2. Squeeze out excess water and place firstly under the chin, then wrap the face and press.

  3. Gently hold your hands along the jaw line, then up over the eye and forehead area. This action stimulates the lymphatic system which is very important for healthy skin.

  4. Hold the cloth on the face for 30 seconds, while inhaling the aroma that is released.

  5. Repeat this process 3 times before cleansing with Cleansing Cream or Soothing Cleansing Milk.

  6. Complete with several splashes of cold water.

  7. Compress & Hydrate is shown during the first part of this video

“Using a Compress brings life to your skin, you’ll notice the difference with your cleansing and it leaves you with much clearer, softer skin.”
